Potentization according to pharmacopeia is a mathematical-mechanical process by virtue of which the inherited dormant dynamic curative power of drug is aroused or increased by modifying drug strength/drug power to dynamic power through the simultaneous and successive processes of dilution & friction in a definite order.

Dr. Hahnemann explained Drug Dynamisation in the 5th & 6th editions of Organon, 269th Aphorism (§).

Homoeopathy drugs are potentized by 2 methods:

1. Trituration: when substances are insoluble, then they grind with the lactose until it reaches the point at which it can be dissolved.
2. Succussion: when substances are soluble. This process is helpful in removing the toxic effects of the drug. With succussion, healing effects are amplified.

There are three scales for the preparations of the homeopathic potencies:

1. Decimal scale: It is denoted by ‘X’
2. Centesimal scale:It is denoted by ‘C’
3. Millesimal Scale: It is denoted by ‘LM’

Benefits of Potentisation in Homoeopathy

• It aroused therapeutic properties, which are not active in natural substances while in their crude state.
• The potentization method turns the poisons into safe medicine and removes the side effects. Eg. arsenic, strychnine, snake heavy metals, and spider venoms never be used as medicines in their crude form but these are safe, and effective for disease treatment when in potency.
• Removes addictive effects from narcotics. For example, Opium in its crude form is highly addictive but in potentize form or in potency it treats many health conditions. It becomes non-habit forming in nature.
• It is safe to use homoeopathic potentized medicines with conventional medicines.
